Background of the Study :
Ensuring the safety and security of students in secondary schools is a critical concern, particularly in regions where traditional security measures may be inadequate. The integration of IoT technologies offers promising solutions for developing smart security systems that can monitor and respond to security threats in real time. This study aims to optimize smart security systems using IoT for secondary schools in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. The system will incorporate devices such as surveillance cameras, motion sensors, and access control mechanisms, all connected through an IoT network to provide continuous monitoring and immediate alerts. By leveraging cloud computing and data analytics, the system will analyze security data to detect anomalies and potential threats, thereby enhancing response times and preventive measures (Ibrahim, 2023). The research will also examine user interfaces and the system’s integration with existing school management platforms to ensure ease of use and interoperability. Emphasis will be placed on reducing power consumption and ensuring data privacy through robust encryption methods. The study will involve pilot testing in selected secondary schools to evaluate system performance, user acceptance, and cost-effectiveness. The anticipated outcome is a scalable, efficient, and reliable smart security system that can significantly improve the safety of secondary school environments in Jalingo LGA (Olu, 2024; Adeniran, 2025).
Statement of the Problem :
Secondary schools in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, face persistent security challenges due to outdated and manual security measures. Traditional security systems are often inefficient, prone to human error, and lack real-time monitoring capabilities, leaving schools vulnerable to threats such as unauthorized entry and vandalism. The absence of an integrated security solution that leverages modern IoT technologies results in delayed response to security incidents, compromising the safety of students and staff. Furthermore, existing systems rarely incorporate data analytics or automation, which are essential for proactive threat detection and management. There is a critical need for a smart security system that can continuously monitor school premises, promptly identify security breaches, and facilitate rapid intervention. This study addresses these issues by designing and optimizing an IoT-based smart security system tailored to the needs of secondary schools in Jalingo LGA. By integrating surveillance devices with sensors and establishing a central control platform, the proposed system aims to enhance situational awareness and improve response times. Additionally, ensuring low power consumption and robust data protection are key components of the system’s design. Addressing these challenges is crucial for safeguarding the school environment and promoting a secure educational atmosphere (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

This study is significant as it develops a smart security system using IoT to enhance safety in secondary schools. The system’s real-time monitoring and automated threat detection are expected to improve emergency response and provide a safer educational environment, contributing to reduced risks and better security management (Olu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to secondary schools in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, and does not extend to primary schools or higher education institutions.
